2008

LEARN...

Michigan Tech applicants will be solicited from the two international sustainable development programs:
Undergraduate applicants from the new International Sustainable Development Engineering Certificate program. Contact Prof. Kurt Paterson (paterson@mtu.edu) for more information. As this certificate program still awaits official approval, current applicants should instead document their past or planned involvement in International Senior Design in their Statement of Interest (see Application).
Doctoral applicants from the Graduate Certificate in Sustainability program. Contact Prof. James Mihelcic (jm41@mtu.edu) for more information.

All majors within these programs are welcome to apply. Each year, three undergraduates and three doctoral students will be chosen, then paired into undergraduate-graduate teams. Doctoral students will be expected to mentor the undergraduates through the research process (figure 1). The goal of this program is to gain experience on international sustainable development engineering research projects. The projects must be beneficial to the community being served. As such, close work with the Bolivian community and Non-Governmental Organization (ACDI/VOCA Bolivia) to identify and design appropriate projects will be crucial. Partnering with Bolivian engineering students and communities in the design and execution phases will enhance the usefulness and sustainability of the project.
